This meeting is at my place. There should be free drink if I can get my van to start to make it to the "beer store." We will be talking about what Mike has been up to with this Emergency Dialer project and also talk specifically again about MapHub GIS backend options. We have total control over elements in c++. This is an exciting time for CDL though. With a number of members including myself now physically located back in Pittsburgh, PA - we are back to regular meetings. We have meetings every other Thursday evening at a different location so if you are in the area and want to attend, by all means send me some mail and you can join in. ++ CARBON DEFENSE LEAGUE We will be in Berlin next weekend at Transmediale. Re-Code.com is up for a software art award there and the festival was gracious enough to bring a couple people that worked on that project over. Visit http://www.transmediale.de for more information. MapHub is now in real development stages. We would still love to have help from experienced GIS types in the actual software development. We have a small budget for this project and am hoping to find more funding with a few proposals out. A new secret web spoof/performance project will be unveiled in March so look for that (in the vein of Re-Code.com) We have some new fun phone projects in the works as well, some will be rolling out in the next month with different degrees of completion for your amusement from the CDL toolbox. In an effort to speed up our collective practice we have added a Wiki, an innner circle dlist and regular physical meetings. We have also been invited to present in Barcelona the first weekend in April so all our Spanish hactivists should start talking about ideas to pull off at that event http://d-i-n-a.net P2P and midi specialists are needed to help out on a project that extends re-code.com. Some coding is complete but some more works still needs to be done. Email if interested. No Ca$h. We met some fun kids at the Brookly Underground Film Fest and we thought we should share their project with you for you artsy types. It is at http://www.wooloo.org and this is from their site "Wooloo has developed the premier online tool for artists to create their own free and user-friendly web sites. For no charge at all, anyone can sign-up and immediately go on to show their artwork internationally." Re-Code.com T Shirts are available and videos will be as well. Wait until the videos are ready if you want both as we will have a package deal soon. ++ CREATION IS CRUCIFIXION Mike Laughlin (CiC drummer) has been spotted on MTV2 - watch for the cattle Decapitation video. CiC is still very much unfortunately on hiatus and sooner or later I will get around to designing the release of the Antenna Builder tracksa recorded in 2001. They will still be released through Robotic Empire. If I get around to it, automata might be repressed through Willowtip. No future releases planned unless we get someone to temporarily fill in for Mike L on drums. We are in no hurry to start writing/playing again so we may just try to work it out remotely with Mike. Nathan B is doing well in SF and with 5/5/2000. Check out their latest release. ++ RANDOM Thanks for sticking with this list. Lots of things are happening this year. The CDL is part of a residency exploring collective practice so all of my time is now dedicated to CDL and writing. If you are a techy, geek, saboteur, trickster, whatever and want to work with CDL - get in touch. We can get you involved pretty easily as we have about 8 projects going on right now. thanks Nathan Martin Carbon Defense League (CDL) Hactivist Tactical Media Network http://www.hactivist.com __________________________________________________ Do you Re-Code!? Please read this complete page so you understand what's going on. The vector layers on this site are served from a completely open-source combination of products. The map images are the result of WMS requests to a MapServer application. The queries are the result of WFS requests to a GeoServer application on the same server. Both applications are using a common PostGIS spatial database, which is a spatial extension to the PostgreSQL relational database system. These products are all open-source and free, as is the Linux operating system that it is running on. This site was developed using the Internet Mapping Framework product available from Moxi Media Inc. of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This version of IMF inter-operates with one or more server products that support the Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) specifications published by the Open GIS Consortium, including, but not limited to the server environment described above. This site demonstrates some of IMF's capabilities that can be achieved using integrated WMS and WFS services within an IMF application. The following notes briefly explain some of the features demonstrated: a.. The map is drawn using WMS GetMap requests. If the map is drawn using multiple services, the resulting images are stacked in the browser window. For example, in this example, the first two layers in the layers list are served from TerraServer, and displayed under the vector layers served by the MapServer server. b.. The Identify and Drill Down Identify tools use WMS GetFeatureInfo requests. A WMS can only respond with feature information using a mouse click, which is fine for this function. Information about a feature cannot be found using complex shapes or queried by attributes using a WMS alone. c.. The Select tool and the options in the page displayed when you click the Select Tab use WFS GetFeature requests to find features matching complex shapes and attribute searches. Initially, the tool is configured to select features using a point or rectangle drawn by the user. The shape type used for the query can be changed by using options on the Select Tab page. The layer that is queried by the select tool can be changed by clicking on the Identify icon beside the layer's name in the layers list, or by selecting a selectable layer on the Select Tab page. d.. In this example, a limit of 100 results is set for WFS query requests. e.. IMF highlights the selected features using locally drawn graphics layers. The graphics layers are not simply drawn over the map, but can be set to draw between layers served from the WMS servers. f.. The Clear button can be used to clear selections. g.. On the Select Tab page, there is a Select By Attribute option. In this example, you can only select features from the Cities and Counties layers by attribute, and only use one pre-defined fields to query. The query can be constrained to return matching records within the visible map if you wish, which uses a compound spatial / attribute filter to request the data from the WFS server. h.. This example has debugging turned on so that you can see the WFS requests and responses. This wouldn't typically be displayed to the user on a production application. i.. The Select By Layer option on the Select Tab page can be used to select features from one layer that intersect the selected features in another layer. To see how this works, select a couple of counties, then go to the Select Tab page and choose the Cities layer from the list of selectable layers, then click the select by layer option. When the Select By Layer page comes up, click the OK button. An IMF site that uses WFS is very powerful. The geometry objects that IMF uses in its recordset object are geoprocessing cabable, so results can be processed or filters created that manipulate the shapes using methods like union, intersect, difference, buffer, etc. Moxi Media also licenses a similar mapping application development product that works using ArcIMS as the map engine. IMF is used to rapidly deploy powerful, customized web mapping applications. It is a platform-independent server-side Java application that results in a lightweight, low-bandwidth browser application without plug-ins or client side processing. IMF has been adopted for use by over thirty government and enterprise-level organizations in Canada, the United States, Ireland, Africa, and Australia. Using IMF, it is simple to customize an interactive mapping application that uses selected layers from multiple servers, mark up the map with "graphics layers", and define custom reporting routines for the layers to access data in non-spatial corporate relational databases. For more information about IMF, please see the IMF information page, or contact Doug Cates at doug@moximedia.com. I also want us to apply the project to the Ars Electronica event in Austria. this is a huge grant with a new digital communities category that offer 2 10k euro awards and 4 5k awards. This is not really an art event since it is heavily corporate things like pixar and neil stephenson win there. That deadline however is March 12th. Ryan is in charge of figuring out where/how we are going to serve MapHub Dave, next weekend after I get back from Berlin let's meet up again at CMU and begin development ok. later kids April Nathan Martin # New Cell Number 412 726 2338 5622 Woodmont Street 3rd Floor Pittsburgh, PA 15217 __________________________________________________ STUDIO for Creative Inquiry Carnegie Mellon University http://www.cmu.edu/studio iEAR Studios Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute http://www.arts.rpi.edu Carbon Defense League (CDL) Hactivist Tactical Media Network http://www.hactivist.com __________________________________________________ Do you Re-Code!? He is scheduled to be arraigned March 11 in First District Court in Central Islip. If convicted, Brown faces up to a year in prison. > > "I was absolutely appalled when I saw the article," said a Huntington man whose 9-year-old daughter answered the phone and allegedly was subjected to one of Brown's sexually explicit screeds. "If you were doing a story, wouldn't you at least do a basic background check?" > > Catherine Mathis, a spokeswoman for The New York Times said Friday, "We are not aware of any past criminal activity on the part of Mr. Brown." Brown could not be reached for comment. > > Brown, who was an assistant professor at the Rhode Island School of Design between 1990 and 1994, was arrested six times in Rhode Island for calling random telephone numbers in hopes that a young girl would answer the phone, investigators and school officials said. > > The Huntington girl's father, who asked that his family not be identified, said Brown must have coaxed his daughter's name from her when he made the Dec. 28 call. When the girl answered, Brown allegedly threatened to rape her and her mother, investigators said. Investigators say Brown had repeated his earlier Rhode Island pattern of making random calls, threatening young girls who answered the phone, in the hundreds of calls he made. > > The Huntington call was traced to Debevoise & Plimpton, a prominent midtown law firm where Brown had occasionally worked as a temporary proofreader, investigators and firm officials said. > > Investigators pulled phone records and discovered that more than 700 random calls had been made over several hours that evening. They also used employee access cards to trace movements inside the firm, which occupies 15 floors. But it was a surveillance camera inside the lobby that nailed him, investigators said. > > Brown, who -- according to the newspaper article -- has mapped out surveillance cameras in parts of several cities, knew the location of most cameras inside the office. He deliberately covered his face or averted his glance as he walked by, investigators said. > > But one camera in the lobby he didn't notice. > > It recorded Brown entering the firm that night in the same blue knit cap and scarf he would be pictured wearing in the Times article. > > Brown was arrested on Jan. 8, outside a temporary employment agency and later admitted to making the calls, authorities said. > > "If he's leading people around on tours like he's some sort of patron of human rights," the Huntington girl's father said, "they should at least know who they're standing beside." > > Copyright (c) 2004, Newsday, Inc. > > -------------------- > > This article originally appeared at: > http://www.newsday.com/news/local/longisland/ny-licam0124,0,3714980.story > > Visit Newsday online at http://www.newsday.com > From nathan@hactivist.com Mon Feb 9 20:41:25 2004 Return-Path: X-Original-To: hactivist_discussion@dod.net Delivered-To: hactivist_discussion@dod.net Received: from darkside.dod.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.dod.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id A6271166311 for ; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 20:41:24 +0000 (UTC) Received: from cdlstudio (CDL-STUDIO.CFA.cmu.edu [128.2.102.179]) by darkside.dod.net (Postfix) with SMTP id 162B616630C for ; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 20:41:24 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: <00ae01c3ef4d$1538a560$b3660280@cdlstudio> From: "Nathan Hactivist" To: Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2004 15:41:23 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1158 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165 X-Spam-Checked-By: darkside.dod.net Subject: [Hactivist_discussion] Fw: MapHub X-BeenThere: hactivist_discussion@dod.net X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.3 Precedence: list Reply-To: CDL inner circle List-Id: CDL inner circle List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 09 Feb 2004 20:41:26 -0000 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cameron Shorter" To: "Nathan Hactivist" Cc: "mapbuilder" Sent: Monday, February 09, 2004 3:33 PM Subject: Re: MapHub > Hi Nathan, > Firstly, I'm interested to know more about your project.
