Read chapter four “On the Origin of a Species.”  This will give a good introduction to polyalphabetic ciphers.  Also pay attention to Leon Battista Alberti’s cipher disk description (pp. 127-130), and Trithemius’ advances in polyalphabaticity including his tableau on page 136.  Perhaps the most interesting entry in this chapter comes on pages 147-148 about the Vigenere cipher. Takes about 1.5 hours to read.
